Description

9in x 12 in watercolour

Morgan le Fey, as a young woman musing with ambivalence on the paths of light and shadow - the serpent is a representation of evil in Christianty and knowledge in older pagan traditions , the sun is often seen as male, a symbol of a sky god, while the dark opening of the earth is seen as a female counterpart, mother earth. The Yew tree is symbolic in many cultures as a tree of life/death/re-birth, such as Yggdrasil the Norse tree of life - central pole and unity of the universe. As Christianity took root many churches were built on previous Pagan sacred sites with Yew trees and so it had its own associations with this too - the character of Morgan le Fey is from a time when these two traditions were fighting for supremacy in the landscape of Britain...

Started this months ago and forgot about it, mainly due to not being able to work out how to portray the sunlight:)

The Megalithic structure is based on Weylands Smithy, Morgan is loosely based on a pic of Jessica Connerly ( ? The girl from Labyrinth film, not sure of name)
